MVP3 and what it means for Gravitate Health

At the beginning of year 5 of the Gravitate Health project, explore the story of the development of MVP3 told by an accomplished front-end developer, member of the project, Riccardo Leoni and the Product Owner, João Almeida.
What is MVP3, and how does it relate to the Gravitate Health project?
Building on the foundational success of MVP1 (Minimum Viable Product, version 1), which demonstrated seamless interaction with the FHIR system, MVP2 marked a significant step forward for Gravitate Health. During the MVP2 testing phase, feedback guided thoughtful adaptations and fine-tuning of the G-lens® app’s UX/UI, improving non-functional features like readability, maintainability, and scalability. Building on this groundwork, MVP3 introduced a range of user-focused improvements aimed at refining the overall experience. These updates include an upgraded search engine for more intuitive navigation, enhancements to dark mode for improved accessibility, expanded explanations for highlighted text to provide deeper context, and the introduction of completely new features. The following features have been implemented in the mobile application of the Spanish scenario:
  • Advanced ePI Search: enhanced capabilities to search for text inside the electronic Product Information (ePI).
  • Highlighting and Collapsing Lenses: added lenses that highlight relevant ePI sections based on the user’s IPS and collapse unrelated content.
  • Lens Explanations: added descriptions for highlighted ePI sections to explain to users the reasoning behind it.
  • Search ePI: search section developed to search for an ePI stored in the FOSPS servers.
  • Summary Leaflet: we developed and are currently testing a summary leaflet section that provides concise ePI information generated by an AI module.
  • Additional Material: display of regulatory and educational content, including Additional Risk Minimization Measures (aRMM) and Health Education Material (HEM) related to the ePI selected.
  • Chatbot: we are now testing a generative AI chatbot for answering user questions about ePI content.
  • Multilingual Support: options to view the ePI in different languages, such as English and Spanish.
  • Enhanced Settings: customizable features including dark mode, text size adjustment, and lens activation toggles.
  • Onboarding: a section of the app dedicated to guiding users through the application features.
How does MVP3 support user experience and adaptability in the health domain?

MVP3 includes the following sections within the mobile application:

1. Login, 2. Profile based on International Patient Summary (IPS), 3. Medication List, 4. Leaflet, 5. Personalized Leaflet, 6. Summary Leaflet, 7. Additional Materials and resources, 8. Chatbot, 9. Search for ePIs, 10. Onboarding, 11. Settings

Each of these sections has been meticulously designed to align with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines or WCAG 2.2. Integrating WCAG guidelines not only enhances simplicity and usability but also aims to improve accessibility for individuals with low vision, cognitive, or learning disabilities. During this phase, significant advancements were made in UX/UI design through a detailed third iteration, emphasizing refined methodologies and extensive user feedback. Key improvements focused on enhancing user interaction in all sections for better accessibility and usability. These efforts culminated in the release of new user-centered mockups for MVP3, showcasing robust design principles and scalability for future needs. The project combined advanced methodologies with continuous user engagement to deliver a highly refined User Experience and User Interface (UX/UI).

What is the future and impact of MVP3 on the wider European and international health landscape?

MVP3 holds great potential to transform the European and international health landscape by extending the foundations laid by MVP2. With its ability to generate personalized health information and materials, MVP3 positions itself as a pivotal tool in addressing the global challenges of health literacy and patient engagement. By leveraging personal information from the International Patient Summary (IPS), MVP3 delivers tailored health content, bridging the gap between complex medical information and individual patient understanding.
On a European scale, MVP3 could harmonize patient education across member states, supporting cross-border healthcare initiatives under frameworks like the European Health Data Space. Personalized digital leaflets can empower citizens to make informed health decisions, fostering better adherence to treatment protocols and reducing medication related errors. This shift toward proactive patient involvement aligns with EU policies promoting health equity and the digitization of healthcare services.
By empowering individuals with accessible and comprehensible health materials, MVP3 sets the stage for a more informed, health-conscious global population, ultimately driving improved health outcomes and system efficiencies.

As we approach year 5 and completion of the Gravitate Health project, what are some of the key outcomes and priorities for MVP3 that we should know?

The main outcomes of MVP3 include:

  1. Enhanced User Experience: The MVP3 release introduced several user-focused improvements, including an upgraded search engine for more intuitive navigation and enhancements to dark mode for better accessibility. A tablet version was also developed to provide patients with a solution for any device they choose to use. These updates ensure a smoother and more accessible experience for all users.
  2. Advanced Features and Functionality: New features such as the advanced ePI search, focusing and collapsing lenses, additional materials and the chatbot for answering ePI content questions, have been implemented. These additions significantly enhance the app’s functionality, providing users with deeper insights and more efficient navigation.
  3. Improved Accessibility and Customization: New features, including expanded explanations for highlighted text, robust multilingual support, and enhanced settings, are designed to address the diverse needs of users. These enhancements ensure that the app is not only more accessible but also highly customizable to individual preferences, fostering a personalized and inclusive user experience.
In conclusion...
MVP3 marks a pivotal step in developing the G-lens® app prototypes, balancing technical innovation, ease of use, and compliance with GDPR and healthcare regulations. This release sets the foundation for future iterations, ensuring the application's evolution to meet diverse user needs while supporting improved health outcomes through personalized, accessible, and user-friendly functionalities.
