HL7 FHIR Connectathon 37: Takeaways from the Vulcan / Gravitate Health ePI and GIDWG Track

At the HL7 FHIR® Connectathon 37, that took place in Atlanta, Georgia, between September 21 and 27, the Vulcan and Gravitate Health ePI and GIDWG Track concentrated on advancing the lifecycle management and version control for electronic Product Information (ePI) and the effective use of Pharmaceutical Product Identification (PhPID) and Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) identifiers.

Key stakeholders in standards like GS1 Global, ISO TC215 WG6, HL7 Europe, and leading academic institutions such as the University of Oslo as well as industry partners like Pfizer and Datapharm were among the participants.

The Track achieved consensus on a method for handling ePI and list versions using consistent Bundle IDs across updates, along with business identifiers to ensure accuracy and traceability. The group emphasized the separation of approved and draft documents, with language-specific variations treated as separate entities. They also outlined technical validation rules, best practices for business versioning, and strategies for ensuring compatibility with different FHIR server versions.

The Track’s discussions extended to the UMC’s API exchange capabilities, where participants tested workflows for PhPID, Task management, and Subscription processes. These tests validated the integration of PhPID workflows with API authentication and real-time updates via subscriptions, enabling efficient tracking of task statuses.

An essential outcome was the agreement to develop a comprehensive style guide and validation rules tailored for European and Japanese ePIs, with a proof of concept targeted for completion by October 2024. The roadmap includes testing and further refinement leading up to the January Connectathon. This initiative aims to streamline international approaches to ePI, facilitating better interoperability and enhancing the consistency of regulatory information exchange across regions, ultimately supporting a more unified global healthcare data landscape.
